AI Adoption Is Not AI Productivity

AI + Sports

A team can use ChatGPT every day and still waste a lot of time. That’s the distinction more leaders need to pay attention to.

Someone asks AI to draft something. Then they re-prompt it, fix the tone, correct an error, reorganize the answer, paste it somewhere else, and edit it again. AI was involved. But did it actually remove any work?

Usage isn’t productivity

There’s a big difference between “I use ChatGPT to help with this” and “we redesigned this work so it takes less time and doesn’t need rebuilding every time.” The first is adoption. The second is productivity.

AI can save time in one place and create it somewhere else

A task that took 30 minutes might produce a first draft in 30 seconds. Great. But if the next 15 minutes go to re-prompting, editing, fact-checking, and formatting, the savings aren’t what they looked like. The work moved. It didn’t disappear. I think of this as time displacement.

The better question

Instead of “how much are we using AI?”, ask “what do our people no longer have to do because of AI?” Maybe a report drops from 60 minutes to 20. Meeting follow-up no longer gets rebuilt by hand. An executive gets the key points from a long document in minutes. A partnership team stops recreating the same recap every week. That’s real capacity.

Why this matters in sports

Sports organizations run lean. People wear multiple hats and the work doesn’t slow down. The opportunity isn’t just producing more. It’s giving good people more time for relationships, strategy, revenue, leadership, and decisions that actually need judgment. That’s worth more than knowing 50 clever prompts.

So if your organization says it’s “using AI,” ask one question: what work has actually disappeared? If the answer is fuzzy, you might have adoption. But you probably don’t have productivity yet.
